Interview Modes
Choose between voice and text interview modes for each posting.
Each posting uses either voice or text mode. The mode applies to all candidates on that posting.

The candidate speaks with an AI interviewer via their microphone.
Requirements:
- Desktop computer with a working microphone and camera
- Mobile devices are blocked — candidates see a "Desktop Required" screen
How it works:
- Before the interview starts, the candidate picks which microphone, camera, and speaker to use on a "preparing" screen, with a live camera preview and a microphone level meter
- The interview will not start until the camera and the candidate's face are confirmed and they click Continue
- Camera is used for integrity monitoring only — no video is ever recorded or stored
- If the candidate is silent for too long, the interview ends automatically (5s warning, 10s auto-end)
- Powered by Retell AI with GPT-4.1
- Billed per minute
The candidate types responses in a real-time chat interface.
Requirements:
- Any device with a browser — mobile included
How it works:
- No camera or microphone required
- No idle auto-end (no per-minute cost)
- Same AI model and scoring methodology as voice — different input, same rigor
- Billed per message
Comparison
| Voice | Text | |
|---|---|---|
| Device | Desktop + camera + mic | Any device |
| Integrity monitoring | Full (camera + browser) | Browser-only |
| Billing | Per minute | Per message |
| Best for | Senior roles, culture fit | High-volume, accessibility needs, remote |
You cannot mix modes within a single posting. All candidates on a posting use the same mode. To offer different modes for the same role, create separate postings.
What the Candidate Sees Before a Voice Interview
For voice postings, the candidate goes through a short preparing screen before the interview begins:
- They choose their microphone, camera, and speaker from dropdowns of the devices available on their machine
- A live camera preview shows what the AI's integrity monitor sees
- A microphone level meter moves as they speak, so they can confirm the right mic is picked up
- The interview only starts once the camera is working, the candidate's face is detected, and they click Continue
This reduces "I couldn't hear / my mic didn't work" support issues — candidates fix device problems before any interview time is consumed. There is nothing to configure on your side; this screen appears automatically for every voice interview.
